A MAN was airlifted to hospital with life threatening injuries after a serious car crash.

The A31 eastbound was closed after the collision at Poulner Hill for several hours while emergency services dealt with the incident yesterday.

The crash involved a silver Peugeot 307 which came off the road into a ditch while two passengers, a man and a woman, were inside the vehicle.

The man, in his 20s, was taken to Southampton General Hospital by air ambulance with injuries described by ambulance crews as “serious, possibly life threatening”.

The woman also received serious injuries and was taken to Southampton General Hospital by ambulance.

A spokesperson for South Central Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 11.23am to a single car road traffic collision where the car had gone off the road.

“We sent a rapid response vehicle, two ambulances, three hazardous area response teams and the air ambulance.”

A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said: “We were called out at 11.29am to Malwood Farm in Lyndhurst Road to a road traffic collision involving one vehicle that has left the road.

“We treated two casualties at the scene and handed them over to the ambulance service and they were taken to hospital by air ambulance and ambulance.

“Two fire engines attended, one from Redbridge and one from Lyndhurst.”

The road was fully reopened around 3pm.

Note: Police earlier said the man was transported to hospital by road.
