RESIDENTS were warned to close windows and doors to protect themselves from smoke following a fire at a landfill in Ringwood.

Crews from Hampshire and Dorset were called to reports of a fire at the Veolia Blue Haze Landfill site in Somerley around 7.40pm last night.

Locals were told they could reopen doors and windows late on Monday morning after warnings in the Ringwood, Ashley Heath and Verwood areas.

The blaze has also delayed waste collections around Ringwood and Fordingbridge.

A spokesperson from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) said last night: "There are currently 14 resources at the scene and crews are working to get the fire under control.

"Police have also been notified because there may need to be some traffic control in the area. We are waiting for an update from crews at the scene."

Motorists are still being warned there could be poor visibility as a result of the smoke and are being asked to avoid the area if possible.

"Depending on which way the smoke travels some roads may need to be closed," added the spokesperson.

"At the moment it looks like the smoke is travelling towards the Ashley Heath area."
