POLICE are appealing for an elderly couple to come forward after a pensioner died.

Officers from Hampshire are investigating the “mysterious” death of a 78-year-old man after he sustained a serious head injury.

As reported, the pensioner suffered the injury at his home in Gurnard on the Isle of Wight on Thursday, May 26.

Now police have launched an appeal to find a couple they believe were in the area and saw what happened.

The pensioner was found lying in the road outside his home on Rew Street and had been cutting his hedges at about 10am.

Officers believe he may have fallen and that this could be an accident rather than a crime.

The 78-year-old man was taken to hospital for treatment, but sadly later died.

Officers have been told a couple were in the area and saw what happened. It is believed the pensioner spoke to them briefly.

They are described as white, aged in their sixties, and driving a tan coloured hatchback car.

Police are urging anyone who may have talked with the pensioner or know the couple to call PC Paul Fairweather at Shanklin Police Station on 101 quoting reference number 44160196926.
