Motorists have been warned of  delays after a busy Hampshire road was shut until tomorrow by a burst water main.

Chestnut Avenue in Eastleigh has been closed due to flooding.

It comes after a water main burst between the roundabouts at Bournemouth Road and Templars Way and Red Lodge and Tollgate.

A ruptured pipe has damaged the road between Chandler's Ford and Eastleigh, behind the Asda supermarket.

Around 4,000 properties are experiencing a loss of pressure due to the incident and people in the Chilworth and Bassett areas have reported experiencing poor water supply.

According to Southern Water the it is unlikely the road will reopen until tomorrow.

A spokesperson for Southern Water has now confirmed that water is being reintroduced to houses in the affected area.

They warned that the supply to some properties would return quicker than others.

They said: "As water is restored, customers may experience slight water discolouration. This is due to harmless iron oxide deposits which collect on the inside of water mains and have been stirred up during the disruption. Run the tap for a couple of minutes and the water should run clear. Thank you for your patience."

The incident comes less than a month after another Eastleigh water main ruptured in Bishopstoke Lane, causing a fountain of water to gush up from the road.

A spokesperson for Southern Water said: "Our crews are working to repair a 12 inch burst main in Chestnut Avenue, Southampton.

"Approximately 4,000 properties are experiencing loss of pressure or supply.

"However, we’re working as quickly as possible and hope supply will return to normal later today.

"We have had to close Chestnut Avenue and diversions are in place.

"Unfortunately the burst has caused substantial damage to the road and therefore it is unlikely to reopen until Friday.

"We appreciate customers patience while we carry out this essential work."
