A VEHICLE fire closed a major Hampshire motorway last night.

Firecrews were called to a car fire on the Eastbound carriageway of the M27 just before 7pm.

Crews from Redbridge and Eastleigh responded to the fire near junction five.

The incident caused standstill traffic as far back as junction four.

A police car blocked both lanes of the motorway eastbound while the incident was dealt with.

The incident happened just after junction four of the M27 eastbound, where the motorway narrows to two lanes until the M3 joins the road.

The road was reopened after the blaze was put out.
