Downpours and flooding brought traffice chaos as thunder storms hit Southampton - and weather experts have warned there is more to come today.

A severe weather warning has been issued for the region today.

Yesterday the north of the city was worst hit and there was surface water threatening to flood Sainsbury's in Burgess Road.

The A27 at Chilworth Roundabout was partially reopened after closure due to water which left two cars requiring police assistance.

A police officer at the scene said: "It's going to be shut for some time, certainly for the bulk of the rush hour.

"If people could make alternative arrangements that would certainly help them get home quicker."

There were severe traffic problems in both directions on the M27 and there was an "incident" near Town Quay in Southampton which brought drivers to a standstill.

Further misery was added when a lorry broke down on the Redbridge Causeway at around 5pm, causing extreme queues on all approaches to the Millbrook Roundabout.

The HGV was cleared by 9pm.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area.

A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued by the Met Office for the region today.

It had originally been issued for Tuesday, Wednesday and yesterday, and has now been changed to today.

Margaret Whittacker, chair of the Talking Echo newspaper, said her power went off as West Wellow heard its first rumble of thunder.

She said: “It was off for a few minutes. The computer shut down and the lights, TV and clocks went off and the fire alarm pinged.

"The thunder was right overhead.”
