A SPITFIRE will roar across the skies above Hampshire at a major fair celebrating the role of the military.

The iconic aeroplane's flypast is the climax of the Ringwood Armed Forces Day being held on Saturday, June 25.

It follows previous plans for a Dakota aeroplane to fly past being cancelled due to the plane being unfit to fly.

The Spitfire- which celebrated its 80th anniversary this year - will pass over Carvers Recreation Ground, Ringwood, at 3.45pm during celebrations taking place there from 10am-4pm.

It follows Spitfire flypasts in the skies over Southampton in March to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the aircraft’s maiden flight from Eastleigh airfield, now Southampton Airport and a further flight at this year’s Broadlands Country show.

The Ringwood showis in its third year andfamilies can get a closer look at a range of military vehicles and equipment, with troops hosting a series of displays to show the kit in action.

There will be more than 20 vintage vehicles, a display from the Royal Signals based at Blandford, Army Recruiters from Salisbury and various military welfare services.

There will also be cannon fire, re-enactments, fairground rides, live entertainment, music, games, food stalls and refreshments.

Organiser Steve Nash said: “While some may be disappointed about the Dakota I have to say I am over the moon that we now have a visit from a Spitfire.

“It is my all-time favourite. “

The event is supported by The Furlong Centre and Ringwood Events Committee with grants from Ringwood Town Council, the Ministry of Defence and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation.

Entrance is free and more information is available by searching Ringwood Events Committee on Facebook.
