FIREFIGHTERS were called to one of Southampton’s landmark buildings late last night after smouldering rags discarded by workmen caused heavy smoke-logging.
Crews from Hightown, St Mary's and Redbridge fire stations rushed to Carnival House in Harbour Parade at 11.01pm last night after the building's smoke alarm was activated.
A Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Firefighters in breathing apparatus went into the building to investigate and found heavy smoke-logging on the fifth floor.
They discovered the cause to be a smouldering bucket of rags discarded by workmen. The bucket was removed and the smoke cleared using fans. No-one was in the building at the time and no-one injured.”
Carnival House is the home of Britain’s biggest cruise company.
Carnival UK is the parent company of P&O Cruises, Cunard and Princess Cruise, all of which have vessels based in Southampton.
More than 1,000 people work in the glass-fronted building at Harbour Parade, off West Quay Road.
