FOOTBALL fans across Hampshire watched on in disbelief as England’s dreams of Euro 2016 glory were dashed in a shattering 2-1 defeat to Iceland.

Three Lions supporters went through the full range of emotions - from the elation when Wayne Rooney put the side 1-0 up after four minutes through to despair at the final whistle.

Thousands of fans were packed into pubs across the county hoping to kick-start a celebration and cheer their favourites into the quarter-finals against France on Sunday.

But those hopes turned to dust as sloppy defending saw the underdogs, ranked 34th in the world, hit back to score twice in the first 20 minutes and England could not find the goal they needed to take the match into extra time.

It led Roy Hodgson to resign as England coach minutes after the end of the game.

Dozens of fans had taken their places in front of the big screen at Stones in Eastleigh’s High Street for England’s first knock-out match of the tournament.

Before kick-off landlord Chas Stone told the Daily Echo: “If England win the game it will be a good atmosphere. And they should win it, as long as they are not complacent, they they have got no excuse not to win it.”

Things looked like they were getting off to a good start as the pub roared when captain Wayne Rooney scored a penalty after Raheem Sterling was fouled by the Iceland goalkeeper.

But the bar’s good mood did not last long as Iceland equalised just moments later, causing a huge groan to go around the pub.

The fans’ bad mood was made even worse when a mistake from England goalkeeper Joe Haart handed Iceland a shock lead in the 19th minute.

A huge wave of disappointment washed over the bar with fans clutching their heads in disbelief.

At half time Pete Barnett, 27, a freight forwarder from Bursledon, was still optimistic.

He said: “We don’t make it easy on ourselves, it is never easy for us. I reckon we have still got a chance and it will be 3-2 to us in the end.”

The mood was not much better in the nearby Good Companions in Leigh Road either although one optimistic fan continued to shout “C’mon England” through the game.

When Jamie Vardy was brought off the bench to replace Sterling there was an almighty cheer in the pub.

But it was all for nothing as England crashed out of the tournament to a huge sigh of disappointment in the pub.
