ONE of the world’s largest cruise ships has begun its oriental adventure with a glamorous naming ceremony.

Ovation of the Seas is billed as Royal Caribbean’s most technologically advanced ship, with a skydiving simulator and a glass capsule taking guests 300 feet above the ocean.

Chinese film star Fan Bingbing was named the ship’s godmother as she celebrated the company’s first cruise launch in the country.

The Quantum class ship, which weighs 167,800 tons and carries 4,180 passengers, left Southampton for the Far East in April after her unveiling on the south coast last year.

Fan Bingbing, a globally renowned star, was enlisted to name the ship built for the Chinese market at a ceremony in the port city of Tianjin, north east China.

As is tradition, she broke a champagne bottle on the hull to wish good fortune to the ship and her passengers.

The actress, who starred alongside Hugh Jackman in in X-Men: Days of Future Past, told a press conference: “My childhood was filled with the melodies of the sea and I often dreamed about sailing out to sea for an adventure.

"Now, thanks to this invitation from Royal Caribbean, my dreams will come true.”

Constructed at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, Ovation of the Seas will spend most of its time in China, with a short season sailing from Australia.

She is the third of the company’s Quantum-class ships, meaning technology will feature such as robot bar tenders, the RipCord by iFly skydiving simulator and bumper cars.

SeaPlex, the largest indoor sports and entertainment complex at sea, includes roller skating, videogames and a circus school with flying trapeze classes.

The class’s signature Northern Star – a jewel-shaped glass capsule that rises 300 feet above sea level, providing 360-degree views from high above the ship, will also feature.

There are 18 restaurants on board.

Michael Bayley, president of Royal Caribbean International, said: “We are excited to bring our newest and most technologically advanced ship to China.

"The unprecedented first-at-sea experiences will provide an incredible vacation adventure to our guests in the region.

"Chinese consumers have grown to expect the best the world has to offer, and this ship meets that standard like no other – this is a cruise from the future.”

The lucrative Chinese market is expected to expand fourfold by 2020, with a million passengers setting sail from the country last year.

Royal Caribbean claims to have created 100,000 jobs for China’s port cities with its new crew training facility.
