WITH the summer heatwave continuing, police have issued a warning to people jumping into a river in Hampshire.

Officers say they have received a lot of reports of people jumping off the bridge at The Causeway in Romsey and into the River Test.

They say jumping into the river and swimming in it near to the memorial park poses dangers as there is broken glass and old scrap metal at the bottom.

And they are also warning that the river has a strong current which has led to accidents in the past.

A Test Valley by-law is also in place banning swimming in that stretch of the Test, and breaking it could lead to a fine.

PCSO Simon Perrott said: "Although it can be very refreshing to jump in a cold river on a hot day there are much safer ways of cooling down during the summer.

"If anyone should see people swimming or jumping into the river or if they feel distressed by any activity that is occurring please call us on 101."
