TWO men posed as Jehovah's Witnesses before smothering a young woman and burgling her house.

Police are investigating after the incident and say the men put a cloth over the 19-year-old's mouth until she passed out.

They ransacked her home and stole valuable jewellery.

The raid occurred between 12.30pm and 1.05pm on Sunday on Caerleon Drive, Bitterne, Southampton.

The victim was given medical treatment but suffered no ongoing symptoms.

Detective Constable Martin Brewer, said: “I am appealing for anyone with information about this incident to come forward.

"Do you live in the area, did anyone knock at your door claiming to be Jehovah Witnesses?

"Did you see two smartly dressed men wandering around the area who could be connected to this incident?

"As always, we would urge residents to be vigilant when opening their door to strangers.

"If you're unsure of who is at your door, use a door chain and do not open the door fully until you are satisfied they are a genuine caller.

“I would urge anyone with information to get in touch with us as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact DC Brewer at Southampton police station on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
