AROUND one million aircraft enthusiasts are set to make their way to the South Coast over the next four days.

Todays marks lift off for the Bournemouth Air Festival and is set to roar into life with a full programme of displays this afternoon.

However, question marks remain over the weekend running order - as a Met Office weather warning issued for blustery winds and thunderstorms on Saturday could affect flying schedules.

Air festival organisers insisted they would not be cancelling, but that they would be constantly assessing the weather situation as it unfolds.

"We are aware of the Saturday forecast," said a festival spokesman. "We will be keeping an eye on the situation and we will be updating the air festival website and social media with any changes to the schedule.

"Our first priority will always be the safety of spectators."

Today's weather should be dominated by sunny intervals, while light rain is forecast for Friday and Sunday.

Among the favourites set for this year are the daring acrobatic fast jet pilots of the RAF's Red Arrows, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Royal Navy Black Cats helicopter display team and the Typhoon Eurofighter.

This year also promises some brand new attractions, set to amaze the crowds that pack the beach and clifftops.

Regardless of the weather, there will be a poignant service at the Jon Egging Memorial on Saturday morning.

Bournemouth Mayor Cllr Eddie Coope explained: "We will commemorate five years since Jon's passing with a ribbon tie at the memorial sculpture as a mark of respect, remembrance and thanks"

“We also recognise the many positive opportunities for young people, to build their aspirations and confidence, while learning new skills, which have been provided by the Jon Egging Trust’s (JET) Blue Skies programme."

The ceremony will be a private affair as the memorial site remains cordoned off on safety grounds, due to the landslide that affected the area earlier this year.

Jon's mother, Dawn Egging, who is attending the air festival, said: "I only wish Jon could be here to see what has been realised in his name - he would absolutely love it and be so proud."

JET's Blue Skies programme has seen 38 students complete team building exercises, inspirational activities and trips designed to boost their confidence. More than 2,500 local school children have also benefited in the last year from JET inspirational outreach visits.

Bournemouth Air Festival was scheduled to be officially opened at the Highcliff Marriot Hotel this morning.

The opening event was set to include a Battle of Britain flypast, music from HM Royal Marines Band Collingwood and ceremonial army cannon fire.
