AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after an object was thrown at a car windscreen as it was being driven along the motorway.

The 57-year-old driver of the car told Hampshire Constabulary that a stone smashed her windscreen as she was driving on the A3M.

The motorist, a woman from Gosport, was driving on the road in Waterlooville at about 1.20pm on Saturday when the object was thrown at the car.

She had spotted a group of four people on the Hulbert Road Bridge and changed lanes, but as her Ford Focus went under the bridge the windscreen was smashed by the stone which had been launched at her vehicle from above.

The driver was not hurt and was able to pull over and call the police, who are investigating the incident.

She described one of the people on the bridge as a teenage boy who was white, 12 to 14 years old, about 5ft tall and of medium build.

He had short thick blonde hair, was wearing a grey t-shirt and rode away on a bicycle.

Investigating Officer PC Christopher Young said: "Throwing items from bridges at passing vehicles is incredibly dangerous and could cause serious injuries.

"Thankfully in this case the motorist wasn't hurt. This is the only report of this kind that we have received in the area.

"I'd urge anyone who saw anything suspicious on Hulbert Road Bridge at the time to contact us by calling 101".
