WE’VE all enjoyed and marvelled at the achievements of Team GB at the Olympics in Rio.
Gold medal and after gold medal sent the entire country into a sporting frenzy.
Now the people of Hampshire are to be given their chance to show their own sporting skills.
A host of events are taking place across the country as part of the “nation’s biggest ever sports day”.
Tomorrow the National Lottery, in partnership with ITV, are funding thousands of free sporting activities across the UK, building on the outstanding achievements of Team GB at the Rio Olympics.
The events aptly named ‘I Am Team GB’, offers budding Olympians, casual sportsmen and women, and those merely out to enjoy the August sunshine a chance to try out a range of Olympic sports from sailing to trampolining and diving to judo.
The occasion is for all ages, however there is a focus on enabling young people inspired by Rio to try a new sport free of charge.
The Southampton Water Activities Centre, which is run by the Active Nation sport charity, is offering free sailing and rowing sessions throughout the day.
John Kirby, commercial manager of Active Nation at the centre, said: “We have a four-year partnership with ParkLives who are supporting ‘I Am Team GB’.
“The event offers a great opportunity for young people to get down to their local centre and do a taster course in sailing or rowing.”
There are over 30 centres and clubs participating in ‘I Am Team GB’ across the county.
