A MAN'S body has been found after an incident involving hazardous materials at a Southampton hotel.

Fire, police and emergency vehicles are currently at the Travelodge on Lodge Road after being called at 1pm.

Two fire engines from St Mary's and one from Winchester are at the scene and the Daily Echo understands the incident involves helium.

A police statement this afternoon said: “We are currently on scene at Travelodge on Lodge Road following a report of a man’s body having been found.

"Initially, at 12.48pm, it was reported there may be a hazardous material in the room where the body was found.

“As a precaution we worked closely with our colleagues at Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service to make the area safe and ascertain the exact circumstances.

"We can confirm the area is safe, there is no wider risk to the community and the death is not being treated as suspicious.”

Ambulance crews have now left the scene along with fire engines but two police cars are still parked close to the hotel.

Guests are still going into and out of the building and a cordon that was picture earlier today has been lifted.

Staff at the hotel declined to comment on the incident.

A woman who asked not to be named, said:"There we lots of appliances including two fire engine, two police cars and ambulances."

"It was a massive operation but no one knew what was going on."

An ambulance service spokeswoman said this afternoon they were called at 12.47pm to an address in Lodge Road to an incident “potentially involving hazardous materials".

A statement said: "We sent an ambulance, an ambulance officer and a hazardous area response team.

“Sadly one patient was confirmed deceased at the scene.”

A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said: "We are alongside colleagues from police and ambulance.

"No further details are available."

A Travelodge spokeswoman said: "As this is a live police investigation, we cannot make any further comment at this stage.

"We are fully supporting Hampshire Constabulary with their investigation."
