IT’S cricket – but not as we know it.
This was the scene in the middle of the Solent yesterday as the annual Bramble Bank cricket match took place.
As is traditional, the Royal Southern Yacht Club from Hamble took on the Cowes-based Island Sailing Club on the sandbank that only appears a few times each yearbetween the mainland and the Isle of Wight.
The Rev Andrew Poppe, vicar at St Mary the Virgin and Holy Trinity churches in Cowes, blessed the match before watching the Island Sailing Club beat the Royal Southern Yacht Club by one run - 80 to 79.
Spectators gathered in boats to watch the match, which lasted nearly 50 minutes and has been played on and off in the Solent since the 1950s.
It was postponed from last month due to adverse weather.
