FIREFIGHTERS have been called to a blazing flat in Southampton.

Crews dashed to a third floor property in Kent Street, Northam, amid fears that a 16-year-old boy was trapped inside the smoke-filled property.

But Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said everyone had been accounted for.

A South Central Ambulance Service spokesman said a woman had escaped from the property and appeared to be all right.

Fears that a teenage boy was trapped inside proved to be groundless after it emerged that he was not in the flat when the blaze broke out just after 2pm.

The area has been cordoned off as the emergency services deal with the incident.

Two crews from Hightown fire station and two from St Mary’s were called to Kent Street after the blaze started in the five-storey building.

A witness said: “I saw a lot of smoke but no flames. The windows are out and the flat above has probably got some damage.”
