A FAMILY'S holiday became a nightmare when their French campsite was invaded by toxic caterpillars.
The Breakspear family of Eastleigh had been looking forward to a two-week break in the forests of the beautiful Vendee region of France.
“The caterpillar hairs then got attached to everything – tents, clothes, towels, and even our car. We felt like we wanted to itch our own skin off.”
Donna Breakspear.
Key Camp's La Garangeoire campsite near St Julien-des-Landes was a family favourite, and it was their third visit.
It was third time unlucky for Donna, Steve and their young children Casey, 5, and one-year-old Ellis. They were forced to curtail their £1,400 holiday by a week because hairy, allergy-causing caterpillars moved in on the site.
Donna, 31, said: "Everything seemed fine at first. Then after a few days we all started to get what we thought were mosquito bites - small red marks that really itched.
"We went to speak to the campsite area manager and she told us she thought the problem might be caterpillars.
"The campsite owners then sprayed the site with a sort of pesticide cannon but that just made things worse because it blasted all the caterpillars out of the trees and onto the campsite floor."
The hairy invaders turned out to be Oak Processionary caterpillars.
These amazing creatures are covered in long, toxic hairs that can cause dermatitis and breathing problems.
Donna who works for BAT added: "The caterpillar hairs then got attached to everything - tents, clothes, towels, and even our car. We felt like we wanted to itch our own skin off."
Eventually the misery became too much. The Breakspears, of Nightingale Avenue, decided enough was enough, and the holiday was called off.
The family jumped on the next ferry back to England. A week later they are still suffering from the itching. They now want to make other holidaymakers aware of the dangers of Oak Procession-ary caterpillars.
"They ruined our holiday and caused us absolute misery. People need to be aware when they go on holiday not to go anywhere these creatures are."
A spokesman for Key Camp said: "Holidaybreak Camping Division immediately offered them an alternative site. However, the family preferred to return to the UK and Holidaybreak provided full assistance in helping them return safely home."

Let's hope climate change doesn't bring this sort of thing to Britain, although I've already read of something similar happening over here.
