The Hampshire widow of a pensioner who died following a dispute with a cyclist has paid an emotional tribute to her "wonderful, funny and intelligent husband".

Royal Navy veteran Roy Galvin, from Alverstoke, in Gosport was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth following the incident in Bury Road, Gosport, on Sunday.

The 69-year-old had been with his wife Deborah, who was in a wheelchair, when the argument broke out with a cyclist during which he was allegedly pushed over and hit his head on the road.

Mr Galvin was treated for a serious head injury but died on Wednesday morning.

Duncan Snellgrove, of Howe Road, Gosport, was originally charged with grievous bodily harm.

But this was changed to manslaughter when he appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court yesterday.

The 28-year-old was remanded in custody to appear at Portsmouth Crown Court on October 31.

In a statement released through Hampshire Police, Mrs Galvin said: "Roy was my total companion and we had a lot of fun sharing our lives together.

"He was incredibly intelligent and very, very funny. He just loved life and was my best friend in the world.

"Roy retired from the Royal Navy in 1987 and had so many friends in the local area. Everybody knew him when he walked the poodles.

"He was my entire world and was very loyal. He was a wonderful husband to me, brother and thought the world of his nephew Grant. We will all miss him very much".

A Hampshire Police spokesman said: "We can now confirm that sadly the 69-year-old man who hit his head on the road following a dispute on the one-way system on Bury Road in Gosport at around 5.50pm on Sunday (September 25) has died.

"Roy Galvin from the Alverstoke area of Gosport was being treated at the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham for a serious head injury, but sadly passed away at 8.15am this morning."
