A MAN has been arrested after an 11-year-old girl was allegedly assaulted in Southampton.

The schoolgirl was walking in the Romsey Road area of the city on her way to school when a man allegedly approached her and struck her.

She was unharmed but left shaken by the attack.

Now police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them to determine what happened.

It comes as they are stepping up patrols in the area to reassure the community.

The man is described as

  • black
  • around 30 years old
  • 5ft 11ins tall
  • average build.

He has short black or dark brown hair and had a black spacer in his ear.

He wore a light coloured woven jumper.

The girl is described as:

  • white
  • long shoulder length hair worn down
  • wearing a dark blue blazer, white shirt, black trousers and plain black trainers.

Detective Constable Simon Bembridge, said: "We have been in the area carrying out routine enquiries and reassurance patrols.

"We are also working with the local school to ascertain the exact circumstances of the incident.”
