AN 89-year-old pedestrian has died after a car crash in Hampshire.

Police rushed to New Milton after a Rover was reported to have mounted the pavement and hit the woman on Station Road.

Emergency services dealt with the aftermath of the crash, which happened at about 1.57pm yesterday.

The pedestrian was rushed to hospital but police have confirmed she has died.

The driver, a 79-year-old woman from Lymington, is being treated for serious injuries at Southampton General Hospital.

A South Central Ambulance Service spokesman said: "A call came into us at 13:57, reporting a car had gone off the road, hit a lamppost then subsequently hit a female pedestrian.

"We sent three ambulances to the scene."

"One of South Central Ambulance Service's senior officers also attended, as did the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance car."

Both women were taken to Southampton General Hospital.

A woman who works in New Milton High Street said: “It looks like the car went straight across Whitefield road and up onto the footpath before flipping onto its roof.

“When the car went up onto the path it demolished a number of signs and took out a telegraph pole.

“It looks quite serious. Whitefield Road and parts of Station Road are closed and the police aren’t even letting pedestrians walk along the road.”

Another shopowner said she saw a number of police, ambulance, and fire service vehicles.

"I didn't see too much as I was busy in the shop, but the road is blocked and I heard a car overturned."

Cllr Alan Rice said the crash happened close to his house and described it as "the most serious crash in the area for a while".

"The place was crawling with police cars. I also saw a couple of fire engines.

"The vehicle was upside down. I heard two people were badly hurt.

"They're not letting people back into their houses on the road. The police had to escort me out of my drive.

"I saw police officers taking pictures of some personal belongings that were left on the road when the car turned over.

"A recovery vehicle was there putting the car on a trailer around 5.15pm."

Cllr Steve Davies said: “This incident is something that will shock the whole community.

"It definitely shocked me when I saw all the police cars zooming past earlier.

“It is absolutely devastating and my thoughts are with the two elderly people involved.

“This road is not usually an accident hotspot. It is quite busy but I’m sure everyone will be surprised to hear about this.”
