His quirky artwork has gained millions of shares and views - now a talented Hampshire artist will open his Alice in Wonderland-inspired art show in London.

Elmo Hood, who grew up in Southampton and now lives in London, has opened a solo exhibition of his artwork at the Westbank Gallery in Notting Hill until November 24.

The exhibition, “Down the Rabbit Hole”, is an artistic interpretation of the classic book “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll.

Elmo had experimented in the past with fluorescent pop portraits of icons such as Muhammad Ali and David Bowie.

However, the former Thornden School and Barton Peveril Sixth Form College pupil rose to prominence when his “Queen of Hearts” piece went viral on social media, gaining millions of shares and views.

The piece was created when he was playing cards in the pub one evening, and made the composition on the table. He uploaded it onto his Instagram, and the following morning, he had 20,000 likes.

His work has also garnered celebrity approval from the likes of rappers P Diddy, The Game, Jessie J and Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts.

He has since seen his artwork exhibited in galleries all over the world including in London, Paris, New York, Ibiza and Munich.

His piece of Winston Churchill on a World War Two flag was sold a charity auction at the House of Parliament for £5,400.00.

Elmo turned to painting as coping mechanism after a family bereavement in 2011, and after leaving a promising career in sport due to injury, he hasn’t looked back.

He said: “Art was my favourite subject at secondary school (Thornden) where I studied ceramics! I loved the freedom of it.

“However, I never really saw a career in it at the time; it was when I moved to London I began taking my artwork more seriously.

“I am really looking forward to the “Down the Rabbit Hole” exhibition, as I have been working on this body of work since January so I am really excited for everyone to see it!

“I have another exhibition next month in Miami which is going to be incredible.

"I am also potentially doing an art fair in March 2017 over in Abu Dhabi, which will be the first time I have exhibited in the Middle East.”

Elmo previously featured in the Echo after one of his pieces was auctioned at the British Red Cross’s Art 4 Life exhibition and auction to help the charity’s efforts in Gaza, Iraq and Syria.

His work was auctioned alongside works including a Picasso etching and a Tracey Emin piece.
