THEY learnt to swim against the odds – now they have been recognised for their achievement.

A group of determined Hampshire youngsters received prizes at this year’s Southern Water Learn to Swim Achiever Awards.

Learn to Swim supports lessons at 85 pools and clubs across the region and have taught more than 700,000 children to swim since 1992.

Each year the courage and determination of children who have overcome a difficulty in learning to swim or performed exceptionally is celebrated as one child is nominated from each pool.

Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew and Invictus Games gold medallist Mike Goody were at the event at the Pyramids Centre, Portsmouth along with Portsmouth South MP Flick Drummond.

The award-winners included Celina Igene, 9, from Southampton, Charlotte Cook, 9, from Fareham, Helena Schutte, 8, from Southampton, James Cadd, 8, from Winchester, Joshua Hibberd, 8, from Bursledon, Miranda Tatem, 6, from Winchester, Matthew Belding, 6, from Shirley, Ruby Goddard, 7, from Locks Heath and William Stacey, 6, from Eastleigh.

Celina’s swimming teacher Jean Rumbold said: “Celina was one of the most frightened children I have ever taught but was determined to keep going.

"All the pool lifeguards and teachers erupted when she finally achieved her five metre badge.

"Now there’s no stopping her.”

Helena’s teacher Ann Bartholomew said: “Helena never stops smiling. She is a popular young lady and her instructors love teaching her.

“Helena has Downs’s Syndrome but can compete with anyone when it comes to determination.

“She is now confidently swimming 10 metres on her back, and with her drive she’ll achieve much more.”
