A LORRY driver who caused a crash in which two men were killed on the M271 in Southampton has today been jailed for six years.

Southampton Crown Court heard that Keith Mees, 49,was using his mobile phone to access Facebook and ploughed into stationary traffic that was queuing ahead of his HGV.

A car containing Marian Olteanu, 35, and Ion Calin, 42, both from Southampton, was crushed in the resulting crash.

A third driver was seriously injured.

Mees, of Newall, Derbyshire, admitted two offences of causing death by dangerous driving and one of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He was jailed for six years for each of the first two offences and two years for the third. All the jail terms will run concurrently.

He was also banned from driving for ten years.

As he was led away he appeared to apologise to relatives of the men who died. He put his hand on his heart and gave a slight nod.

The court heard that Mees had made a 13-minute phone call to his girlfriend just before the fatal crash a year ago yesterday.

The judge, Nicholas Rowland, told him: "The sole cause of the collision was your decision to access Facebook.

"You were distracted for 20 seconds when you should have been paying attention to the road. You touched the screen four seconds before the collision."
