HAMPSHIRE was flooded with beards and bellies as seasonal Santa Fun Runs took to streets across the county.

On Southampton Common runners ran the course in aid of Brendoncare, which provides care homes and clubs for older people.

In Lymington, with a new record of 1,750 Santas - up from last year’s count of 1,487 - organisers of the Lymington Santa Dash are expecting to raise more than £20,000 in aid of Oakhaven Hospice.

Organiser Mike Denny said: “It’s all about the spectacle and participation. It’s not a race - some people walk the course. But we would especially like to thank the 40 volunteer marshals and John D Wood for sponsoring the event.”

Now in its sixth year, the Winchester event supports local charity Naomi House and Jacksplace.

The charity – which provides care to more than 280 life-limited and life-threatened children, young people and their families – has already raised £15,000 from the run, but is confident of surpassing £25,000 according to marketing manager Keith Wilson.

It is the second year the event has started from the Guildhall and more than 700 people took part – nearly 200 more than the year before.

"It is just a great feeling for us to have that level of support," said Keith, 35 from Andover.

"It is extra special for us as we get to run in the city centre, which is the charity's hometown. This was the most exciting run I have done this year.

"We had people of all ages taking part, including different animals, such as dogs, as well!"

The 5km route took the runners through the High Street and then past the cathedral and the statue of Alfred the Great.

Participants received their own Santa suits for the race and were awarded with medals on completion.
