FIREFIGHTERS are tackling a blaze in Hampshire this morning.

Crews from Hightown, St Mary's and Botley are at the scene of the fire in High Street, Bursledon.

A person was rescued from the blaze and has been taken to hospital by South Central Ambulance Service.

The fire is in the ground floor, first floor and roof of a house and firefighters say everyone has been accounted for.

Tony Deacon, Group Commander for the Southampton Fire and Rescue Service said: "The fire started in the area around the garage and damaged the roof but there is no damage to the other properties around."

Firefighters are carrying on with their work to remove the most damaged area of the roof and make sure that the rest of the building is secure.

"We don't know how long it will take but people can't go back in the house today", Mr Deacon said.

Rik Armatage, 52, an engineer who lives on Bursledon High Street, said: "My daughter's partner saw the flames and called the Fire Rescue Service.

"We could see the high flames from home and we were worried about the person in there".

Five fire enginees arrived to the scene and while the British Red Cross is reassuring people in the area.
