A HAMPSHIRE university is to host a public event to inform people about dementia.

Scientists at the forefront of research into the disease will hold a meeting at the University of Southampton to inform people about the latest progress in the field.

The event, which is now fully booked, will be held on February 1 and is organised by the Alzheimer’s Research UK South Coast Network Centre, a community of dementia researchers from universities across the South Coast.

Dr Katy Stubbs, from Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “This event in Southampton is open to anyone who would like to learn more about the condition and hear more about the work of Alzheimer’s Research UK.

"There are around 850,000 people in the UK living with dementia, with nearly 20,000 in Hampshire alone.

"Dementia touches the lives of thousands of people, with many of us acting as informal carers and working tirelessly to support a loved one with the condition.”

The event will offer people the chance to know more about the condition and pose questions to experts.

During the day participants can get involved in scientific cafés, where small groups can talk to experts about dementia, their research and have their questions answered. There will also be information stalls.

Dr Tracey Newman, coordinator of Alzheimer’s Research UK South Coast Research Network, said: “Dementia is one of the greatest medical challenges we face as a society.

"This event is a fantastic opportunity for people to hear about the vital research taking place to find new ways to help people living with the condition.

"We are passionate about sharing our knowledge of this devastating condition and the progress being made to tackle it, and invite you to come along and ask as many questions as you have.”

Professors James Nicoll and Anna Barney, from the University of Southampton, will be some of the speakers at the event.

Prof Nicoll will discuss about new treatments currently testes in clinical trials, while Prof Barney will tell people about how a person’s speech could shed light on their dementia.

The event is free and will take place from 9am until 3.30pm in Garden Court, Building 40 at the University of Southampton.

Refreshment and lunch is provided.
