A Hampshire MP has condemned US President Donald Trump ahead of a city protest planned for this evening.

Southampton and Itchen MP Royston Smith has spoken out on social media about the foreign leader as residents prepare to gather in protest of his travel ban on seven mainly-Muslim countries.

President Trump has signed an executive order, effectively bypassing congressional approval, stopping any nationals of seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the US, in what the administration is calling an immigration clampdown.

It has been met with widespread criticism from all over the world, with the MP admitting Trump is meeting his ‘very low’ expectations.

Sharing posts on social media, Mr Smith said: “President Donald Trump is living up to my very low expectations of him. Our ‘special relationship’ is with the American people, not him.”

In response to an online reply insisting that people should ‘lump it’, Mr Smith added that if people disagree with Trump’s policies and pronouncements then they should say so.

A protest is set to begin outside Southampton’s Civic Centre this evening at 5.30pm, the second event of its kind since President Trump began his reign in the White House 10 days ago.

The city’s protest is the latest in a long line of campaigns against the President, who was elected following one of the most divisive political campaigns in US history, and who has spoken out about building a border wall, as well as previous comments alleging that climate change was not real.
