A HOST of famous faces have backed an ambitious campaign to make Delay’s song Valentine top the music charts by February 14.

The #Valentine2Number1 campaign was launched last month after the band's frontman Greg Gilbert, from Southampton, was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer and secondary lung cancer in December and was told by surgeons that they could not help him.

The campaign aims to give Greg a boost while he undergoes his chemotherapy, the only treatment available to him on the NHS.

Fans are being asked to act fast, as they only have until midnight tonight to download the song and get it into the charts.

Celebrities including TV presenter Chris Packham, Saints legend Matt Le Tissier and X-Factor winner Matt Cardle have all stated their support for the campaign.

Other famous backers include The Bluetones singer Mark Morris, DJ Eddy Temple-Morris, Primal Screams’ Simone Butler, former Saints player Francis Benali, and Shed Seven’s Rick Witter.

Saints also helped promote the song by playing it at half-time during their match against West Ham at the weekend.

The campaign has had a strong start since its inception, with Valentine topping various download charts and even being featured on popular TV show Soccer AM.

Now, fans are being urged to give the song one final push, as it was sitting just outside the midweek chart announced on Monday.

Jodie Copeland, who launched the campaign after hearing of Greg’s battle, said: “We have had a brilliant start – to see the song at number one in various bestseller charts over the weekend was a real boost.

“However, we need people to download the song as soon as possible to give it a real chance of returning to the charts.”

A fundraising gig to coincide with the campaign is being held at The Brook on February 14, and features Birdpen, Dead Rabbits, Novatones and Sean Mcgowan whilst Band of Skulls will be DJing throughout the night.

Tickets are £10 and the doors will open at 7pm ready for an 8pm start.

Dylan Clarke, one of the owners of The Brook, said they were hoping to raise around £5,000 from the gig to donate to Greg’s cause.

Since Greg’s diagnosis, fans from across the globe have come together donating almost £150,000 to help the rockstar pay for a potentially lifesaving cancer treatment, not available on the NHS.
