Three people were rescued in a fire drama in Southampton.

Fire crews from across the city were called to a building in Shirley over reports of a blaze in the eartly hours of the morning.

Firefighters using a 10.5-metre ladder rescued three people from a first floor window in the incident in Howard Road.

In total 30 firefighters were are the scene which was attended by six fire pumps attended the scene from St Mary's, Redbridge, Hightown, Eastleigh and Totton.

The Daily Echo understands that the fire started on the top floor of the building.

Stef Mussi, 22, a student who lives near to the house said: "It sounds crazy, I'm so surprised that it's all happened.

"A lot of students live around here and it's a popular area.

"I can't believe three people were rescued on a ladder, it's good to know people weren't hurt and got out alright."

There were no injuries and an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.

Roxanne Clark, 26, a school worker who lives nearby said: "It's such a quiet neighbourhood and something you don't expect.

"I am shocked to hear it happened but glad no one was hurt."

A police spokesperson said: "No one was injured in the fire which ended at around 5am. Everyone was evacuated from all floors of the building."

South Central Ambulance Service wrote on social media that four patients were discharged at the scene.

Redbridge fire watch manager Rob Jenks said: "We were called at 3.40am to reports of a house fire in a building converted into flats and rescued three people via a ladder.

"There were eight people in the building in total including a small child who were placed in the care of the ambulance service, but did not need to go to hospital.

"The six flats were all evacuated on the ground, first and second floor. The crews worked hard to contain the fire, and an investigation is ongoing with the police to establish the cause.

"We were on the scene for two hours and back at the station by 5.40, with crews from Redbridge, St Marys, Eastleigh, Hightown and Totton in attendance, with six pumps in total."
