A HAMPSHIRE school is in mourning after the death of its popular lollipop man.

Tributes have poured in following the death of Stanmore Primary School’s crossing patrol man Brian Wall.

Brian, who was 53, was regularly seen helping children and parents safely cross the road outside the Winchester school.

Floral tributes have been left outside the school from saddened parents and children.

The school has paid tribute to Mr Wall, who had lived in the area for many years.

His daughter Chantal Ward, 28, from London, described him as a man with a great sense of humour, and said her family were overwhelmed with the tributes for him.

She said: “He was such a beautiful person he used to laugh at being a lollipop man but he really enjoyed it.

“He had such a great sense of humour, everything would be just a joke and he would never take anything too seriously.”

Remembering how he became a lollipop man, Ms Ward added: “I just remember one day he said I have applied to be a lollipop man, it was the last thing I expected him to do.

“He loved talking to people, he loved Stanmore and living in the area.”

In his spare time Mr Wall loved reading, he also was a member of The Sportsman’s Club in Stanmore, where he would often socialise with his friends.

A statement from Stanmore Primary School said: “We are all shocked and upset to hear the sad news of Brian’s death. He was much loved as a kind and gentle man, always ready with a cheery smile. He could often be seen having a chat with families and local people.

“Brian had lived in Stanmore for many years and his daughters both attended our school when they were young, so he was very much part of the community.

“We shall all miss him very much.

“Our sincere thoughts are with his family and friends at what is a very difficult time.”

An open wake was held at The Sportsman’s Club where people were asked to bring stories and photos of Brian to celebrate his life.
