The Southampton heats of the Rock Challenge schools dance contest came to a rousing climax on Friday and Saturday at the city's Guildhall.

On Friday night Wellow Primary School were crowned winners and go through to J Rock Final.

Wellow School's performance was entitled SS Mendi - The Ship History Forgot – commemorating the 600 South Africans lost off the Isle of Wight in 1917 in one of the worst maritime disasters in British waters.

Wellow and Southampton's Sinclair Primary School – whose pupils performed Don't Let Anything in or Out! about a night in museum where the exhibits come alive – took awards for performance, choreography, stage use and concept.

In second and third respectively were Sinclair and St Marks CE Primary from Farnborough.

Saturday night's winners were Southampton's Foundry Lane Primary with their Macbeth-inspired Be Careful What You Wish For who also took home several different category awards including, set design, drama and concept.

In second place were Shirley Juniors with The Boy Who Cried Wolf, and third were Beechwood Junior with Seek and You Shall Find.

Among those attending Saturday's night's heat was Southampton City Council's Cabinet Member for Education and Skills for Southampton City Centre Councillor Darren Paffey, who presented the first place prize.

Cllr Paffey said: “The show tonight has been absolutely inspirational. The quality of the performances has been phenomenal. Their enthusiasm has been utterly brilliant. Everyone should be very proud of what they have achieved.”
