RE: Thomas Gravatt’s letter arguing why students should not pay council tax.

While I accept that “students do not have money lying around”, they do have money to spend going to nightclubs and drinking excessive amounts of alcohol at extremely high prices.

They could instead learn to cook for themselves, providing healthy meals (not necessarily cheap mince for Bolognese) and entertaining each other.

I believe that gymnasiums are often provided within university premises, that there are many sports clubs also within the universities - and how about swimming pools whose entry fees are much less than nightclub entrance fees.

I do also think that staff at universities could also help by providing longer hours before a “professor”, instead of expecting their students to do their own research. I had a student spending his last academic year with me, and I was horrified to discover that most mornings he had to refer to his mobile phone to discover which lessons were available that day.

It seemed that it depended on the tutor to make the decision and not the prescribed timetable.
