IT is one of the biggest fast food chains in the world.

Now McDonald's will be cleaning up an area in Southampton chosen by Daily Echo readers.

More than half a million people across the country are being encouraged to organise and participate in events.

Local franchisee, Tony Bennett said: “To win the war on litter everyone needs to work together, with businesses having an important part to play.

"McDonald’s is committed to working with local communities to tackle litter having done so for over 30 years since introducing 'litter patrols' to its UK business in 1982, and we are really pleased to be supporting the Great British Spring Clean.

"Our staff are eager to be involved and it's great that we can work with local people to choose somewhere that really needs it."

This comes as part of the "Great British Spring Clean" weekend of March 3-5, although the event in Southampton will take place on March 8.

Readers can choose one of three areas: Swaythling train station, Riverside park in Swaythling and Southampton University.

The food chain also is inviting local stakeholders and community to join in.

McDonald's will be providing bin bags and litter pickers to participants.

The Great British Spring Clean started two years ago and this year the organisation is hoping that 500,000 will get active and help clean the community.

Daily Echo readers have expressed the need for cleaner streets and now is the chance to create a cleaner area.

The poll will close at 4pm on Thursday, March 2.
