Hampshire's community leaders have thrown their support behind Saints as the club attempts to win its first major trophy since 1976.

Southampton mayor councillor Catherine McEwing has been joined by MP’s Royston Smith, Caroline Nokes and Alan Whitehead in wishing the side luck, with all three members of parliament watching from the stands at Wembley on Sunday.

The side are set to take on Manchester United in the League Cup final this weekend, and will set foot under the Wembley arch for the club’s first major final since 2003.

Royston Smith said: “I will be at Wembley for it. I was too young apparently to go to the FA Cup final in 1976, but I did manage to go three years later and in 2003. I hope to be celebrating after the match if we can win it.

“My message to supporters both in Southampton and travelling to London would be to make sure you support the team and get behind them in any way you can.”

Mayor councillor Catherine McEwing has also wished the team luck in beating Jose Mourinho’s side.

Cllr McEwing said: “I’m hoping to get a ticket myself so I can cheer the side on in person!”

MP for Romsey and Southampton North, Caroline Nokes said: “I’m hugely excited to be going to Wembley after all these years. It’s the first time I’ve been to Wembley for a football match and I cannot wait.

“I think we all need to get behind the team and support them every step of the way.”

Season ticket holder Alan Whitehead, MP for Southampton Test, will be sat among the supporters in for the final, cheering on Claude Puel’s men.

Alan Whitehead said: “I’m very excited of course, it will be great to see the team out in the new Wembley again. I think it will be 2-1 to the Saints!”

Reverend Thomas Wharton, Vicar of St James’ hasn’t been fortunate enough to get a ticket, but will be cheering on the side from back in Southampton.

Revd Thomas said: “We have a lot of supporters in our area and we shall be wishing them luck in our service on Sunday morning.

“Hopefully they can manage to beat United and see the trophy home.”
