Protestors marched through Southampton yesterday to voice their anger over waterfront development in the city.

The group met outside the Bargate to display their grievances with the Royal Pier development at Mayflower Park

The Green party has a counter proposal for the development in the form of a "people's park", which features trees, shrubs, a beach and more.

Daily Echo:

Party member Jonathan Martin said: "We have named this march ‘Love Our Waterfront’ because we are concerned that there has been too much construction without the consultation of the people.”

Angela Mawle, co-ordinator for the Green Party, added: “This is important to the city because have so many roots by the riverside.

“The area has got tatty and it needs some love, but when it turns into a commercial area, it will lose all of its qualities.

“It was a natural playground where generations came, but if it becomes a casino, it will be ruined.”

Members claim the waterfront doesn't benefit the people of the city, but rather large corporations.

As previously reported, the plans went on show in 2015, revealing what Southampton's Royal Pier could look like in the future.

Under the proposals, the crumbling site would be transformed into a £400m development with a casino, five-star hotel, gourmet market and hundreds of homes.

Daily Echo:

As part of the revamp, Mayflower Park would become the home of a 98 ft high monument to the iconic Spitfire aircraft, and be extended through the reclamation of land from the sea.

The park, which would also become the new home for the PSP Southampton Boat Show, would be expanded by 8,000sq m to about 50,500sqm in size and feature a play area with an "interactive water feature", a games area, a timber boardwalk and a cafe.

Bo Fletcher, who turned out to support the party’s march with other family members on her birthday, added: “I am here because I feel passionately about the way Southampton City Council are ruining the park.

“We came here as children and now there is only a tiny playpark next to the toilets.

“Now, they want to redevelop it again and build a casino. The council is not thinking about the people.

“Lots of elderly people come down to look at the waterfront in their cars, and I feel this development will cut off public access, meaning people won’t be able to do that anymore.”
