LOVE Collecting is on at the City Space gallery at Winchester Discovery Centre until April 2, offering a unique glimpse into the range of amazing objects and artefacts from the collections held by Hampshire Cultural Trust.

The trust curates and cares for the art and museum collections owned by Hampshire County Council and Winchester City Council.

These extensive collections mainly relate to the historic county of Hampshire as it was before the 1974 local government reorganisation of county boundaries but there are also items from further afield, particularly in the decorative arts, biology, geology, social history and industrial history collections.

Christine Taylor, curator of the Natural Science collection said: "This has been a wonderful opportunity to research and relate the stories of collectors whose passion for collecting remains at the heart of the amazing artefacts in our care today”.

However collecting isn’t the exclusive domain of organisations such as the trust. Donations of collections made by private individuals form the core of many of the nation’s greatest collections, from the British Museum and the V&A to many regional museums.

Perhaps you have been bitten by the collecting bug? Whether you are a train spotter or a twitcher, collect stamps or superheroes you are not alone! Our professional conservators have produced fact sheets that offer advice on how best to take care of your collections whether metal or plastics, textiles or ceramics.

There are also free, family-friendly activities in the exhibition including a spotter quiz, puzzles and colouring in sheets. Why not have a go at curating your own display on our magnetic display board.

The exhibition is free and closes on Sunday 2 of April 2017.

City Space, operated by Hampshire Cultural Trust, is open Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm, Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 11am to 3pm, closed Bank Holidays. Check the Winchester Discovery Centre website – www.hants.gov.uk/wdc - for holiday opening hours.
