A lorry driver has been jailed following fatal crash on the A34 where he drove into broken down car while he was on his phone.

Dariusz Tokarczyk, of Kennion Road, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, was jailed for four and a half years after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

The 47-year-old drove his lorry into a broken down car in which a young woman was sitting. He did not see the car in time to avoid it because he was looking at his mobile phone.

It follows the imprisonment of Andover lorry driver Tomasz Kroker, 30, who smashed into a row of stationary traffic on the same road while on his phone in another fatal collision.

Tokarczyk was driving his lorry on the southbound carriageway of the A34, just north of the M4 junction, at Chieveley, Berkshire on March 22, just before 9.30pm.

Further ahead on the same carriageway 21-year-old Jodie Moss, from Swindon, was sitting in her Vauxhall Corsa which, according to forensic examiners, suffered “a catastrophic engine failure”. Her car was stationary in the inside lane, she had switched on its hazard warning lights.

According to dashcam footage the road was not busy and other drivers are seen to manoeuvre past her vehicle. Tokarczyk’s vehicle drove straight into hers and sadly Jodie died.

Last year Winchester MP Steve Brine joined a campaign calling for action to make the A34 safer.

Mr Brine said: “I know many of my constituents use the A34 on a regular basis, and they will not be surprised to learn that there were nearly 2,000 accidents between 2010 and 2014, and on the section running between the M40 and the M4 at Chieveley, there were sadly 32 fatalities.

“There are often very troublesome delays, alongside issues around Bullington Cross just past Sutton Scotney, with a number of accidents there.”
