SO SOUTHAMPTON City Council has decided to introduce fortnightly refuse collections.

Can I ask where was the consultation with residents as to whether they agreed with it?

Yes, the council is strapped for cash, but reducing the refuse collections is hardly going to save much.

And what will the dustmen do when they are not collecting refuse? Will their hours be reduced?

Letting rubbish pile up is not acceptable. The city needs to be clean, and regularly, it isn’t.

If the council wants to fund services we, as residents, want supplied properly, they should get rid of the unelected, overpaid, executive advisors and managers the council seems to appoint at the drop of a hat.

Southampton is plastered with student accommodation at a rate exceeding affordable new housing.

Students seem to be more important than people requiring somewhere to live.

I really wonder if the council really does understand how to run a city like Southampton.

The last time a fortnightly collection was planned, the idea was dropped soon after.

Yes, there is a lot of household rubbish to collect, and a large percentage of residents still do not know how to recycle properly – which reduces the main household waste bin contents.

If the council made more effort to inform residents how to recycle properly, then the amount of household waste would be reduced.

That does not preclude collecting rubbish every two weeks.

The city council must consult with its residents in the future if a major decision is needed. Just putting it in is not acceptable.

The council are elected to represent the residents of Southampton and should remember that.
