POLICE have stepped up the hunt for up to two people after the daylight robbery of a cash-in-transit van.

Yesterday officers revealed how a 22-year-old man from Southampton had been arrested in connection with the robbery, which saw a security guard rushed to hospital.

After hitting the guard hit with a weapon, raiders stole an unknown quantity of cash and fled the scene in a car.

A 22-year-old has been arrested following the attack, which police say was carried out by either two or three people.

The man has been bailed until May 30 after the robbery on Romsey Road in Nursling on Friday morning.

The guard was struck, suffering injuries to his hand and was then taken to Southampton hospital shortly after the attack at 8.30am.

The car used to flee the scene hasn’t been described by police, with the potential amount stolen also not being disclosed.

Despite the incident, chairman of Nursling and Rownhams Parish Council Phil Bundy has said that the robbery is an unusual occurrence.

Cllr Bundy said: “You never hear of anything like this from our area. It’s certainly a rare occurrence. We have had some issues with the nearby Co-operative in the past.”

The council said on Friday that although crime rates were increasing, they didn’t believe that Nursling was an area with bad statistics, something Cllr Bundy echoed.

He said: “We aren’t an area with high crime, as unfortunate an incident as this is. It is seemingly convenience stores that are targeted, criminals seem to think they’re convenient for them.”
