TEN people have been rescued from a fire in Southampton.

Four crews from across the city were called to a building in St Mary Street at 5.14am this morning.

The fire involved a flat above a shop and is believed to have started on the stairwell.

A local resident who lives nearby and did not want to be named said: "I woke up because I heard noise and people shouting, but then I fell asleep again."

One crew from Hightown, one from Redbridge and two from St Mary’s attended the scene.

People rescued have been taken to the hospital.

The area around the blaze has been cordoned off and the cause of the fire is being investigated.

Firefighters left the scene at 6.36am.
