IAN Saunders insists he bears no grudges after being sacked by Winchester City just eight months after his appointment.

The former Petersfield Town manager expected to be discussing next season’s budget when he was told the news.

He said: “I’ve gone through lots of emotions in the last 24 hours, I was not expecting that decision. Sometimes you get a feeling but I didn’t see it coming at all.

“[Director of football] David Malone called me in for a meeting that I thought would be about next season’s budget.

“But the conversation took a different turn. I’ll wallow in self pity for a while - no-one wants to be told they’re not wanted.

"I’ve been relatively successful at the clubs I’ve been at so it was hard to hear.

City have not won in seven games since work commitments took army warrant officer Saunders away in February.

“I’m sure I would have been successful at Winchester given the chance to continue.

"But I fully accept and respect the decision and I wish everyone at Winchester all the best.

“There’s no animosity from me towards the football club or anyone there. I understand it’s football.

"And I’ve told everyone I brought to the club to see the season out, it would be remiss of them not to.”

Saunders hopes to be back in football soon. “I’ve had some fantastic messages and anyone who knows me knows I love my football.

“I’m open to offers from other clubs - I haven’t been out of football since I finished playing.”
