POLICE have launched an investigation after man's body was found in a Winchester house.

Officers have set up a cordon around the property off Thurmond Crescent, Stanmore.

They were called at 5.31pm on Wednesday, March 22, to a report that a man’s body had been found at an address in Birch Court.

The man, believed to be local and aged 37, was confirmed dead.

The police said that at this stage, the death is being treated as “unexplained”.

A full investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of what took place.

A police spokesman said residents will notice an increased police presence in the area.

Police tape, a forensic tent and a police van were set up at the edge of the property, along with two additional police cars and a van on Thurmond Crescent.

This afternoon forensic examiners in protective white suits were still at the scene nearly 24 hours after the man was discovered.

Chris Mattock, of Thurmond Crescent, said: "It looks like a bloody murder scene. It's quiet round here but shows you can never tell. Someone told me this morning and I was surprised, I couldn't believe it."

Stanmore resident Balint Jukasz, who did not want to give his road name, said: "My wife saw the police cars last night and told me. It's a quiet area normally round here."

Richard Pope, of Thurmond Crescent, said: " I didn't hear anything unusual but it's pretty out of the ordinary."

Two investigators were seen knocking on a door next to Birch Court but were unable to speak to anyone, and would not speak to the press.

This is being treated as an isolated incident with no connection to the terrorism attack in London, said a police spokesman this afternoon.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting Operation Teasel.

Alternatively, people can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where information can be left anonymously.
