A VULNERABLE Hampshire man died of sepsis after he refused to eat for a number of weeks of his life, an inquest heard.

Geoffrey Hussey died on June 17 last year at Kitnocks House in Curdridge, days after being discharged from hospital.

Winchester Coroner’s Court heard how the 66-year-old had only stayed at the home for a few days before he died.

The inquest heard that he previously stayed at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth for several weeks.

He started to refuse to eat and drink and became aggressive to other residents at an unidentified unit he stayed at before.

Consultant at the Queen Alexandra Hospital Dr Mark Rolland said Mr Hussey suffered from learning difficulties and epilepsy.

He said Mr Hussey refused to eat and was aggressive when doctors tried to help him, and had a fear of medical intervention.

His condition worsened in hospital and by the time he went to Kitnocks House he was Dr Rolland said he was "dying".

Pathologist Dr Adnan Al-Badri said Mr Hussey had a suffered a urinary tract infection as well as severe pneumonia, and died of sepsis.

Dr Al-Badri concluded cause of death was sepsis caused by pneumonia and said extreme malnourishment contributed.

Senior coroner Grahame Short recorded a verdict of death due to natural causes which was contributed to by self neglect.
