STUDENTS at the University of Southampton were victorious at a national paintball competition.

The team of seven travelled to Penkridge in Staffordshire to compete in the sixth annual tournament at the end of last month.

After winning the group stages the team competed against the University of York, walking away with a 2-1 victory.

President of the paintball team, Jason Attwood, said: “The team played well on the Sunday morning winning the majority of their placement games and after re-seeding were placed into the final against the Yorkshire Yetis of York University.

“The final was chaotic with the last player from each team shooting one another out simultaneously; meaning a rematch was on the cards.

“After another well fought and tense point Southampton managed to grasp victory.

“The event was extremely enjoyable thanks go to everyone involved in the paintball community and Southampton Student Union for providing funding for the team’s attendance.”

Student union vice-president for sports, Tom Provan, said: “Another superb win from the Paintballing Society.

“The team has worked hard to defeat York and we were delighted to see them return with another trophy for Team Southampton."
