A chef who punched his girlfriend in the head after she accused him of being unfaithful was tasered by police.

Stephen Smith, 36, was found guilty of assaulting Claire Spooner at her home in Amesbury on the night of August 24.

A court heard that Smith had undressed and got into Ms Spooner’s bed, but she had become angry when she smelled what she thought was another woman’s perfume.

Prosecuting, James Burnham said Smith then punched her in the head, without warning.

He punched her again before Ms Spooner ran downstairs and barricaded herself in the living room.

Four police officers arrived and Smith repeatedly shouted and lunged towards them.

He then picked something up from the table, which one officer thought was a knife.

Another officer fired his Taser stun gun at the angry chef, who fell back before repeatedly swearing at the officers and Ms Spooner.

Representing himself at Salisbury Magistrates Court on Friday, Smith, of Stonehenge Road, Durrington, said that there was “no excuse” for what he had done.

He said: “I do not remember the events as clearly as everyone else does.”

Magistrate Simon Browning said it was a “particularly unpleasant incident”.

“You drank a lot of alcohol, and it was a domestic assault from one part of the house to another,” he said.

Smith was sentenced to 16 weeks imprisonment for assault, suspended for two years, with £650 court costs, and a£116 victim surcharge.
