The NEW £1 coin is being rolled out across the UK’s high streets - but you probably won't see them in Southampton just yet.

Only 33 post office and bank branches across the UK will receive the 12-sided coin, which is replacing the current circular addition in an attempt to combat fraud.

The lucky cities expected to be receiving the new coin are London, Bath, Newcastle, Liverpool, Cardiff and Edinburgh with its circulation expected to be extended over the next few weeks.

The Royal Mint claim the new 12-sided coin is expected to be the most secure in the world and is thinner and lighter than the current issue of the £1.

Adam Lawrence, chief executive of Royal Mint said: “It’s been designed to be fit for the future, using security features that aim to safeguard our currency, and currencies around the world, for years to come.”
