EMERGENCY services were called to Northam Bridge in Southampton last night after a woman jumped off it.

The woman, who is understood to be in her 40s, had removed her jeans and jumped in the water.

It is understood the woman suffered a broken leg and was hypothermic.

The woman floated downstream and managed to grab hold of some moored boats, at which time the emergency services were called.

Fire crews from St Mary’s, Redbridge and Fareham coordinated the rescue operation from the bridge.

Police were also in attendance.

Water rescue teams from Hill Head, Southampton and the Calshot RNLI were called. A Southampton patrol boat retrieved the woman from the water and took  her to Dock Gate 4 where an ambulance picked her up and took her to hospital.

The incident occurred at 8.00pm on Saturday night when low tide meant the water was only two and a half metres deep.

Reports of a man also in the water turned out to be unsubstantiated.

Emergency crews stepped down at about 9.30pm.
