CANTELL School pupils hit the headlines numerous times throughout 1989 for their entrepreneurial prowess, their cooking skills, and even for playing bridge.

During this time, the pupils had four successful businesses running simultaneously. One manufactured items such as jewellery and cushions, while another sold maths equipment.

On top of this, students also ran the school bank and a mini-enterprise scheme which saw business ideas running for six weeks at a time.

An orchestra made up of 220 children practised and performed in a concert held at the school in Violet Road, Southampton.

A French town was created on the school grounds where children from various middle schools were invited to explore.

Paper ‘Francs’ were used as currency to purchase croissants and bonbons, whilst 20 children on exchange from France gave authenticity to the language.

The Polygon Hotel played host to Cantell students gaining work experience. The restaurant recruited front-of-house staff, the kitchen had them cook, and housekeeping saw the youngsters carry out chamber maid duties.

At the end of the extremely busy academic year, pupils had their timetables scrapped so they could try something different. Many took up the challenge of learning bridge and were coached by British champion David Huggett.
